Math With Fishes!

As we are currently in between themes, I thought of digging up some old learning aids for my evening sessions with Little Bee. So one evening after work, we used our old paper fishes - still in fairly good condition! - from a previous Fish theme, and indulged in 2 Math games.

1) Numbers 11-20
I spread out the fishes numbered 11 to 20, and got her to identify the numbers whenever she caught a fish with her fishing rod. She managed fine, except for 13 and 20.

2) Sorting
Sorting games generally reinforce mathematical concepts and develop logical thinking skills. Little Bee was busy sorting out all the fishes into small, medium and big fish groups by herself. We also learned about small, medium and big concepts in Mandarin - 小,中,大. It was a good 10-minute reprieve which allowed me to oversee Big Bee's homework for a while!

In all, we spent just 30 minutes on these activities, and Little Bee was fully energized and intrigued after these games. Short spurts of learning activities really complement Little Bee's learning style, given her shorter attention span. She was even telling me how fun these paper "toys" were!

Who says we need to buy toys when we can create homemade ones? :)

Blessed mum: No, I am not in the preschool education insudtry! I mainly researched online for these ideas...and also just brainstormed for such ideas on my own to fit what I want to teach them, eg these fishes in the blog entry. Am sure you can do it too!

Hey I like this idea and shall borrow it. In fact, I love some other learning activities you do with your children too.
