Math With Squirrels!

As part of our learning activities under the Forest Animals theme, I created learning aids from pictures of squirrels and acorn nuts to demonstrate to Little Bee how fun Math is, and how it is so applicable to everyday life.

Our cute little squirrels with their big fat acorns!

Little Bee is enthralled by this, and we take these out as "toys" to play with on a regular basis. With this learning aid, I could inculcate in her the concept of counting and addition/subtraction.

We also enact stories from these cute squirrels and acorns. One of her favourite games is about how she would pretend to run a restaurant selling acorns for the squirrels, who would then form a long queue with numbers on their tummies to indicate how many acorns they would like to eat. She loves this game and would be busy "dishing" out the right number of acorns to serve these greedy and impatient squirrels.

Learning the concept of numbers and quantity

This number game can be used for any combination of numbers, and hence, could be played over a long period of time for teaching numbers right up to 100 (and even groups of numbers, like counting in 2s, 5s, 10s, although I had not done that yet!). This was why I laminated these squirrels and acorns so they can withstand the rough handling of Little Bee! I also stuck velcro pieces on all the numbers and squirrels so Little Bee can have fun attaching and reattaching new numbers.

Simple addition the fun way!

How long did you spend cutting these squirrels and acorns? Or did you outsource to Big Bee to do?

I have never printed out pictures and cut them (like this) to play Maths games with my boys simply because of the time required to cut and laminate.

Great idea! May I know where did you go to buy your laminating machine and how much does it cost? And the Velcro too... where can I buy it from? Thanks!

Domesticgoddess: I spent about 1.5 hours printing, laminating, cutting and sticking in the velcros. The majority of the time spent is on cutting and sticking the velcros, but Little Bee helped a lot with the velcro sticking, so we made that into a game!

viv: Yes, bought the laminating machine, and it was really fun! You should go buy it - it is great for laminating Big Bees' certificates from ballet and piano as well, so they won't turn yellow.

Yellowgiraffe: Little Bee quite likes this game, but given her short attention span, I just need to keep coming up with new ideas to play with this set - gets a bit tiring sometimes!

Ing: You can buy the laminating machine and velcro from Popular. I bought the laminating machine for about $70, I think, but there is a range of machinese from $40-$80, if I am not wrong.

Blessed mum: I believe all of us can do this simple craft, just need to take some time to do it! You can do it perfectly, I am sure! Hey, btw, Big Bee told me yesterday that she saw Rachel and Charmaine at our poolside - were you guys there?

average Joan: Thanks! It just takes passion and interest, that's all. I think everyone can come up with these activities, especially if we ask our children what they enjoy doing and we adapt just for them. That's the beauty of homelearning!
